Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 6.1.1Describe the structure of nucleotides, including ATP (no structural formulae).
  2. 6.1.2State that adenine and guanine are double-ring purines and cytosine, thymine and uracil single-ring pyrimidines.
  3. 6.1.3Describe DNA as an antiparallel double helix with complementary base pairing, different hydrogen bonding in C-G and A-T and phosphodiester bonds.
  4. 6.1.4Describe semi-conservative replication in S phase, with DNA polymerase, DNA ligase and leading and lagging strands.
  5. 6.1.5Describe the structure of an RNA molecule, using mRNA.
