Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 4.1.1Identify the forces acting in a situation.
  2. 4.1.2Understand the vector nature of force and find and use components and resultants.
  3. 4.1.3Use the principle that the forces on a particle in equilibrium have zero vector sum (components in any direction sum to zero).
  4. 4.1.4Represent a contact force by normal and frictional components and use the smooth-contact model, understanding its limitations.
  5. 4.1.5Understand limiting friction and limiting equilibrium, recall the coefficient of friction and use F = μR or F ≤ μR.
  6. 4.1.6Use Newton's third law.
