Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 5.1.1Describe a catalyst, and describe enzymes as proteins that act as biological catalysts in all metabolic reactions and are needed to keep reactions fast enough to sustain life.
  2. 5.1.2Describe enzyme action in terms of an active site whose shape is complementary to the substrate, and the formation of products.
  3. 5.1.3Investigate and describe how temperature and pH affect enzyme activity, including the optimum temperature and denaturation.
  4. 5.1.4Supplement: explain enzyme action and specificity using the terms active site, enzyme-substrate complex, substrate and product, and the complementary fit of substrate and active site.
  5. 5.1.5Supplement: explain the effect of temperature (kinetic energy, effective collisions, shape and fit, denaturation) and of pH (shape and fit, denaturation) on enzyme activity.
