What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.
- 9.2.1Identify the structures of the mammalian heart (muscular wall, septum, atria, ventricles, one-way valves, coronary arteries), and state that arteries carry blood away from the heart and veins return it.
- 9.2.2State how the activity of the heart can be monitored (ECG, pulse rate, sounds of the valves) and investigate the effect of physical activity on heart rate.
- 9.2.3Describe coronary heart disease and its risk factors, and discuss how diet and exercise reduce the risk.
- 9.2.4Supplement: identify the atrioventricular and semilunar valves and explain the relative thickness of the walls of the chambers and the importance of the septum.
- 9.2.5Supplement: describe how the heart works in terms of contraction of the atria and ventricles and the action of the valves, and explain the effect of physical activity on heart rate.
