Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 3.2.1Describe the role of water as a solvent in digestion, excretion and transport.
  2. 3.2.2State that water moves into and out of cells by osmosis through partially permeable membranes, and investigate osmosis using dialysis tubing.
  3. 3.2.3Investigate and describe the effects on plant tissues of solutions of different concentrations, and state that plants are supported by the pressure of water inside cells pressing on the cell wall.
  4. 3.2.4Supplement: describe osmosis in terms of water potential and explain its effects on plant cells using the terms turgid, turgor pressure, plasmolysis and flaccid.
  5. 3.2.5Supplement: explain why water potential and osmosis matter in the uptake and loss of water by organisms.
