Learning objectives
What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.
- 6.1.1Describe photosynthesis, state its word equation, and state that chlorophyll is a green pigment in chloroplasts that transfers light energy into chemical energy for making carbohydrates.
- 6.1.2Outline how the carbohydrates made in photosynthesis are used and stored: starch, cellulose, glucose for respiration, sucrose for transport in the phloem and nectar.
- 6.1.3Explain why plants need nitrate ions to make amino acids and magnesium ions to make chlorophyll.
- 6.1.4Investigate the need for chlorophyll, light and carbon dioxide using suitable controls, and the effects of light intensity, carbon dioxide concentration and temperature on the rate of photosynthesis.
- 6.1.5Investigate and describe gas exchange of an aquatic plant in light and dark using hydrogencarbonate indicator solution.
- 6.1.6Supplement: state the balanced chemical equation for photosynthesis.
- 6.1.7Supplement: identify and explain the limiting factors of photosynthesis in different environmental conditions.
