Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 11.5.1State that the bonding in alkenes includes a carbon–carbon double covalent bond and that alkenes are unsaturated hydrocarbons.
  2. 11.5.2Describe how alkenes and hydrogen are manufactured by cracking larger alkane molecules at a high temperature with a catalyst.
  3. 11.5.3Describe the reasons for cracking larger alkane molecules.
  4. 11.5.4Describe how reaction with aqueous bromine distinguishes saturated from unsaturated hydrocarbons.
  5. 11.5.5Supplement: state that an addition reaction forms only one product.
  6. 11.5.6Supplement: describe the addition reactions of alkenes with bromine or aqueous bromine, with hydrogen (nickel catalyst) and with steam (acid catalyst), and draw the structural or displayed formulae of the products.
