Learning objectives
What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.
- 11.3.1Name coal, natural gas and petroleum as fossil fuels.

- 11.3.5Describe how petroleum is separated into useful fractions by fractional distillation.
- 11.3.6Describe how the fractions change from the bottom to the top of the fractionating column: shorter chains, higher volatility, lower boiling points and lower viscosity.
- 11.3.7Name the uses of the fractions: refinery gas for heating and cooking; gasoline (petrol) for cars; naphtha as a chemical feedstock; kerosene (paraffin) for jet fuel; diesel oil (gas oil) for diesel engines; fuel oil for ships and home heating; lubricating oil for lubricants, waxes and polishes; bitumen for making roads.
