Learning objectives
What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.
- 12.5.1Describe tests for the anions carbonate (react with dilute acid, then test for carbon dioxide), chloride, bromide and iodide (acidify with dilute nitric acid, then add aqueous silver nitrate), nitrate (reduce with aluminium foil and aqueous sodium hydroxide, then test for ammonia), sulfate (acidify with dilute nitric acid, then add aqueous barium nitrate) and sulfite (react with acidified aqueous potassium manganate(VII)).
- 12.5.2Describe tests with aqueous sodium hydroxide and aqueous ammonia to identify the aqueous cations aluminium, ammonium, calcium, chromium(III), copper(II), iron(II), iron(III) and zinc.
- 12.5.3Describe tests for the gases ammonia (damp red litmus paper), carbon dioxide (limewater), chlorine (damp litmus paper), hydrogen (lighted splint), oxygen (glowing splint) and sulfur dioxide (acidified aqueous potassium manganate(VII)).
- 12.5.4Describe how a flame test identifies the cations lithium, sodium, potassium, calcium, barium and copper(II).
