Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 2.3.1Define isotopes as atoms of the same element that have the same number of protons but different numbers of neutrons.
  2. 2.3.2Interpret and write nuclide symbols, showing mass number and proton number, for atoms and ions.
  3. 2.3.3Supplement: state that isotopes of an element have the same chemical properties because they have the same number of electrons and so the same electronic configuration.
  4. 2.3.4Supplement: calculate the relative atomic mass of an element from the relative masses and abundances of its isotopes.
