Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 6.2.1Describe how the rate of a reaction is affected by changing the concentration of solutions, the pressure of gases, the surface area of solids and the temperature, and by adding or removing a catalyst (including enzymes).
  2. 6.2.2State that a catalyst increases the rate of a reaction and is unchanged at the end of the reaction.
  3. 6.2.3Describe practical methods of investigating the rate of a reaction, including following the change in mass of a reactant or product and the formation of a gas.
  4. 6.2.4Interpret data, including graphs, from rate of reaction experiments.
  5. 6.2.5Supplement: describe collision theory in terms of the number of particles per unit volume, the frequency of collisions, the kinetic energy of the particles and the activation energy, Ea.
  6. 6.2.6Supplement: use collision theory to describe and explain how concentration, gas pressure, surface area, temperature and catalysts (including enzymes) affect the rate of a reaction.
  7. 6.2.7Supplement: state that a catalyst lowers the activation energy, Ea, of a reaction.
  8. 6.2.8Supplement: evaluate practical methods of investigating the rate of a reaction, such as measuring a change in mass or the volume of gas formed.
