3.2Relative masses of atoms and molecules

Relative masses of atoms and molecules in Cambridge IGCSE Chemistry: what the syllabus expects you to know, the learning objectives and how to practise.
Subtopic21 practice questions1 lesson

Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 3.2.1Describe relative atomic mass, Ar, as the average mass of the isotopes of an element compared with one-twelfth of the mass of a carbon-12 atom.
  2. 3.2.2Define relative molecular mass, Mr, as the sum of the relative atomic masses (relative formula mass for ionic compounds), and calculate it from a formula.
  3. 3.2.3Calculate reacting masses in simple proportion, without using the mole.
