Learning objectives
What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.
- 2.5.1State that a covalent bond forms when two atoms share a pair of electrons, giving the atoms noble-gas electronic configurations.
- 2.5.2Describe covalent bonding in simple molecules including H₂, Cl₂, H₂O, CH₄, NH₃ and HCl, and draw dot-and-cross diagrams for these and similar molecules.
- 2.5.3Describe, in terms of structure and bonding, why simple molecular compounds have low melting and boiling points and poor electrical conductivity.
- 2.5.4Supplement: describe covalent bonding in molecules including CH₃OH, C₂H₄, O₂, CO₂ and N₂, and draw dot-and-cross diagrams for these and similar molecules.
- 2.5.5Supplement: explain the low melting and boiling points of simple molecular compounds in terms of weak intermolecular forces (the types of force are not required), and explain their poor electrical conductivity.
