Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 1.7.1.1Name the energy stores: kinetic, gravitational potential, chemical, elastic (strain), nuclear, electrostatic and internal (thermal).
  2. 1.7.1.2Describe energy transfers between stores by forces (mechanical work), electric currents (electrical work), heating, and electromagnetic, sound and other waves.
  3. 1.7.1.3Apply the principle of conservation of energy to simple examples, including simple flow diagrams.
  4. 1.7.1.4Supplement: use Ek = ½mv² for kinetic energy.
  5. 1.7.1.5Supplement: use ΔEp = mgΔh for the change in gravitational potential energy.
  6. 1.7.1.6Supplement: apply conservation of energy to multi-stage examples, including Sankey diagrams.
