Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 1.7.3.1Describe how useful energy or electricity is obtained from fossil fuels, biofuels, water (waves, tides, hydroelectric dams), geothermal sources, nuclear fuel and light from the Sun (solar cells and panels), and from wind.
  2. 1.7.3.2Compare these methods in terms of renewability, availability, reliability, scale and environmental impact.
  3. 1.7.3.3Understand qualitatively what the efficiency of an energy transfer means.
  4. 1.7.3.4Supplement: know that radiation from the Sun is the main source of all our energy resources except geothermal, nuclear and tidal.
  5. 1.7.3.5Supplement: know that the Sun releases energy by nuclear fusion.
  6. 1.7.3.6Supplement: know that research aims to use nuclear fusion to generate electricity on a large scale.
  7. 1.7.3.7Supplement: define and use percentage efficiency as useful energy (or power) output ÷ total energy (or power) input × 100%.
