Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 2.1.2.1Describe the arrangement, separation and motion of particles in solids, liquids and gases and draw simple particle diagrams.
  2. 2.1.2.2Relate particle motion to temperature, including absolute zero (−273 °C) where particles have the least kinetic energy.
  3. 2.1.2.3Explain gas pressure, and changes in it, by particles colliding with a surface.
  4. 2.1.2.4Know that the random motion of microscopic particles in a suspension is evidence for the kinetic particle model.
  5. 2.1.2.5Explain Brownian motion by random collisions between the microscopic particles and the particles of the liquid or gas.
  6. 2.1.2.6Supplement: know that the forces and distances between particles, and their motion, determine the properties of solids, liquids and gases.
  7. 2.1.2.7Supplement: explain gas pressure as the force per unit area produced by particles colliding with surfaces.
  8. 2.1.2.8Supplement: know that light, fast-moving molecules can move microscopic particles, and distinguish atoms or molecules from microscopic particles.
