Overview

Form 3. Osmosis is also covered here: the syllabus does not name it, but it explains water uptake, turgor and wilting (see the syllabus notes).

Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 8.5.3.1Describe the external structure of a flowering plant, distinguish monocotyledons from dicotyledons, and compare the internal structure of roots and stems (epidermis, cortex, vascular tissue, pith).
  2. 8.5.3.2State the functions of xylem (transport and support) and phloem (transport).
  3. 8.5.3.3Define transpiration and describe its functions, investigate the factors that affect its rate (surface area, distribution of stomata, temperature, wind, humidity, light intensity), and describe leaf adaptations that reduce water loss and the significance of wilting.
  4. 8.5.3.4Define translocation and describe the effects of ring-barking.
