Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 14.1.1Recall how alkanes are produced: hydrogenation of alkenes and cracking.
  2. 14.1.2Describe complete and incomplete combustion, and free-radical substitution of ethane by Cl₂ or Br₂ in ultraviolet light.
  3. 14.1.3Describe the free-radical substitution mechanism: initiation, propagation and termination.
  4. 14.1.4Suggest how cracking gives more useful alkanes and alkenes from heavy fractions.
  5. 14.1.5Explain the general unreactivity of alkanes by C–H bond strength and low polarity.
  6. 14.1.6Recognise the environmental effects of CO, oxides of nitrogen and unburnt hydrocarbons from engines and their catalytic removal.
