About this syllabus
Cambridge International AS & A Level Chemistry (9701) is a two-stage course. The AS Level content (topics 1-22) covers atomic structure, stoichiometry, bonding, states of matter, energetics, redox, equilibria and acid-base theory, kinetics, Period 3, Groups 2 and 17, nitrogen and sulfur, the main aliphatic organic functional groups with their mechanisms, addition polymers, synthesis, and infrared and mass spectrometry. The A Level content (topics 23-37) adds lattice and solution energetics, entropy and Gibbs free energy, electrochemistry with the Nernst equation, quantitative acid-base and solubility equilibria, rate equations and catalysis, the transition elements, aromatic chemistry, acyl chlorides, amines, amides and amino acids, condensation polymers, multi-step synthesis, chromatography and NMR spectroscopy, together with practical skills of planning, analysis and evaluation.
How you are assessed
AS Level candidates take Paper 1 Multiple Choice (1 hour 15 minutes, 40 marks), Paper 2 AS Level Structured Questions (1 hour 15 minutes, 60 marks) and Paper 3 Advanced Practical Skills (2 hours, 40 marks). A Level candidates also take Paper 4 A Level Structured Questions (2 hours, 100 marks) and Paper 5 Planning, Analysis and Evaluation (1 hour 15 minutes, 30 marks), in the same series or a later one, carrying forward their AS result.
