Learning objectives
What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.
- 15.1.1Recall how halogenoalkanes are produced from alkanes, alkenes and alcohols.
- 15.1.2Classify halogenoalkanes as primary, secondary or tertiary.
- 15.1.3Describe nucleophilic substitution with NaOH(aq), KCN in ethanol, NH₃ in ethanol and aqueous silver nitrate in ethanol.
- 15.1.4Describe elimination with NaOH in ethanol.
- 15.1.5Describe the SN1 and SN2 mechanisms, including inductive effects of alkyl groups.
- 15.1.6Recall that primary halogenoalkanes tend to react by SN2, tertiary by SN1 and secondary by both.
- 15.1.7Explain the different reactivities of halogenoalkanes by C–X bond strength.
