Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 26.1.1Use rate equation, order, overall order, rate constant, half-life, rate-determining step and intermediate.
  2. 26.1.2Use rate equations with orders 0, 1 or 2; deduce orders from graphs, initial rates and half-lives; calculate initial rates; construct rate equations.
  3. 26.1.3Show that the half-life of a first-order reaction is independent of concentration and use it in calculations.
  4. 26.1.4Calculate rate constants from initial rates and from half-life (k = 0.693/t½).
  5. 26.1.5Relate multi-step mechanisms to rate equations: suggest mechanisms, predict orders, identify intermediates, catalysts and the rate-determining step.
  6. 26.1.6Describe qualitatively the effect of temperature on the rate constant and rate.

Simple rate equations, orders of reaction and rate constants: sample question

1 mark

A reaction occurs in two steps: step 1 (slow) A+B→C+D\ce{A + B -> C + D}; step 2 (fast) A+C→E\ce{A + C -> E}. What is the rate equation?
