About this syllabus

The ZIMSEC A-Level Mechanics syllabus (the Ministry's Mechanical Mathematics, Forms 5-6) models the motion and equilibrium of particles and rigid bodies. Form 5 covers vectors and moments, forces and equilibrium with friction, kinematics in a straight line, Newton's laws of motion including connected particles, projectiles, and momentum and impulse. Form 6 covers centres of mass, elasticity, energy, work and power, circular motion, linear motion under a variable force and simple harmonic motion.

How you are assessed

Continuous assessment (topic tasks, tests and a project) carries 30%. The examination carries 70% in two 3-hour papers of 100 marks: Paper 1, about fifteen compulsory short structured questions (35%); Paper 2, any five of eight 20-mark structured questions (35%).
