Learning objectives

What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.

  1. 6.4.1Form 5: state Newton's laws of motion and apply them to the linear motion of a body of constant mass under constant forces.
  2. 6.4.2Form 5: solve problems using the relationship between mass and weight.
  3. 6.4.3Form 5: solve problems on two particles connected by a light inextensible string, which may pass over a fixed smooth light pulley or peg.
  4. 6.4.4Form 5: model motion vertically or on an inclined plane as motion with constant acceleration.

Newton's laws of motion: sample question

1 mark

Particles of mass 77 kg and 33 kg hang at the ends of a light inextensible string passing over a smooth fixed pulley, and are released from rest. Taking g=10g = 10 m s−2^{-2}, find the magnitude of their acceleration.

Answer in m/s².
