6.2.1Graphs and coordinate geometry
Graphs and coordinate geometry in ZIMSEC A-Level Pure Mathematics: what the syllabus expects you to know, the learning objectives and how to practise.
Subtopic61 practice questions3 lessons
Overview
Form 5 (curve sketching, coordinate geometry, parametric equations). Reducing equations to linear form is taught with amaths.functions.linear-law (6.1.4) and parametric curves with amaths.diff.implicit-parametric (6.5.1).
Learning objectives
What the syllabus expects you to be able to do.
- 6.2.1.1Form 5: sketch graphs of y = kxⁿ (n an integer or ½) and of quadratic and cubic polynomials.
- 6.2.1.2Form 5: locate solutions of equations and inequalities using sketches of graphs.
- 6.2.1.3Form 5: find equations of parallel and perpendicular straight lines.
- 6.2.1.4Form 5: calculate the distance between two points and the perpendicular distance from a point to a straight line.
- 6.2.1.5Form 5: reduce an equation to a suitable linear form (such as y = ax² + b with y plotted against x²) to solve problems.
- 6.2.1.6Form 5: find the equation of a circle.
- 6.2.1.7Form 5: define a curve using parametric equations.
